The Clatuu Fat Freezing website claims this device can remove stubborn pockets of fat immune to diet and exercise.
But here a few things you may want to consider before shelling out $599 per session on fat reduction.
Most reasonable diets 'work'. It's basic biology. If you eat less calories than you consume each day, you're going to lose weight - regardless of genetics, it's pure carbon physics. So, why do most people claim that diets don't work or why do they only work for a short period of time?
1. A calorie restricted diet should be just that, restricted. As a qualified nutritionist, I'm well placed to suggest that eating approximately 500 calories per day under your energy neutral amount is going to be close to the sweet spot in terms of calorie deficit. Any more and you're probably going to recycle too much muscle tissue to counteract the deficit and eating less will feel like progress is just too slow.
2. Most people on a calorie restricted diet don't restrict the calories enough. Sometimes it's purely accidental - like they don't account for the 150 calories in a coffee, 4 times per day. Other times, they're eating food groups which are perceived healthy but extremely calorie dense - like these vegan cakes or our favourite avo on toast.
3. A lot of people sabotage their progress with a binge. Imagine eating 300 calories under target for 7 days and then eat a pizza worth 2100 calories. The cheat days can undo a lot of hard work and discipline.
If someone does manage to follow a calorie restricted diet for any length of time, they will lose weight. But, and this is crucial, genetics will determine where that weight is reduced. Some people experience an even distribution of weight loss, some people will lose weight in one area and maintain it in another.
This is where Fat Freezing / Cryolipolysis can really help. Imagine being happy with your overall weight but want to target one specific area for fat loss. This device allows that to happen. The operators claim that patients can lose up to 20 - 30% of fat cells within a target area.
The marketing for Clatuu may suggest that it's great for people who are frustrated they can't shift certain areas of bodyfat but I think this will appeal to a much wider audience of people who live a relatively healthy lifestyle but want the aesthetic benefits of fat loss without having to really try too hard to achieve it.
